Mountains
Where the earth kisses the sky... Mountains are quite representative of life. When I face a mountain, I always think about how the hell I am ever going to get to the top. But once I conquered the mountain and see the beautiful landscape I am overwhelmed with intense happiness.
Na een ellenlange klim kom ik aan bij een oude herdersnederzetting. Door het regenachtige weer was de omgeving in de wolken gehuld en gaf dit een echt "weg van de planeet" gevoel. Even terug naar de basis: koken op een kachel met houtblokken die je zelf nog moest zagen.
After an almost endless climb I arrive at an old shepherd’s settlement. Because of the grey, rainy weather, the surrounding landscape was shrouded in fog and this gave me a real “away from everything” feeling. Just going back to the basics. Keeping yourself warm with wood you still must cut in pieces so you can use the little stove.
Boven de 2000 meter wordt het leven veel extremer. Ijskoude, besneeuwde winters en zomers waar de zon intens schijnt. Ondanks deze ondankbare omstandigheden komen er op deze hoogten nog tal van vlinders voor. Bijvoorbeeld de Gletsjervlinder of de Gewone dauwerebia.
Above 2000m, life conditions are pretty extreme. From harsh winters till summers where sun is shining very intense. Despite these thankless circumstances you can still encounter insects such as butterflies at these elevations. For example, the Alpine grayling (Oeneis glacialis) and Dewy ringlet (Erebia pandrose).
Er zijn talloze keren geweest dat ik me afvroeg waar ik mee bezig was. Maar keer op keer besef ik dan in wat voor een magnifieke landschappen ik me bevind en dit met mijn eigen ogen kan zien.
There have been countless times that I was asking myself what I was doing. But every time I realize that I am privileged to see these fantastic landscapes.
Sommige avonden vergeet je niet snel. Na een lange dag stappen op een JNM kamp kwamen we eindelijk een geschikte slaapplaats tegen. Een prachtige vallei omringt door woeste rotswanden. Dé plek voor steenbokken dus. Na het eten verschenen ze boven op de bergkam, een verstillend moment.
Dit was zo'n avond die ik nooit ga vergeten!
There are evenings you never forget. After a long day walking across the mountains during a camp of the JNM we finally found a suitable place the put our tents on to sleep. A wonderful valley surrounded by rugged cliffs. The place to be for Ibex! After we ate our diner, the Ibex and Chamois appeared in the dusk. This was such an evening I won’t forget!
Ik word om 4u wakker van de koude. De zware dekens uit de bivakhut geven niet genoeg warmte. Als ik mijn kop uit de hut steek word ik getrakteerd op een machtige sterrenhemel boven de Grivola (3969m). Uiteindelijk doe ik snel al mijn truien aan en geniet van de sterrenhemel en een prachtige zonsopkomst met zicht op het Mont Blanc massief en de Mattenhorn.
I wake up at 4 because of the cold. The blankets in the bivouac doesn’t give that much warmth. When I take a look outside, I forget the cold quickly. A magnificent stary sky adorns the landscape. I quickly put al my sweaters on and enjoy the moment and the fantastic sunrise above the Mont Blanc massif and the Matterhorn.
