Sealtainn
Sealtainn is the Gaelic name for Shetland, an archipelago north of Scotland, at approximately 60° north.
The rocky coasts, wild sea, and the endless bare plains where birds interrupt the silence really appeals to me.
Jan-van-gent / Gannet
In Shetland vind je enorme kolonies van deze vogels. Op onbegaanbare steile kliffen maken ze hun nest. Een waar geluids (en geur) spektakel!
You can find on different locations Gannet colonies in Shetland. The birds make their nests on the steep, impassable cliffs.
A true sound and smell spectacle!
Papegaaiduikers / Puffins
Deze clowns van de zee toveren spontaan een glimlach op mijn gezicht. Uren lag ik tussen deze fantastische vogels die in holen broeden. Vaak in kolonies van wel duizenden holen groot!
Always when I see these clowns of the sea, they put a smile on my face. I lay for hours between these birds who nest in burrows. Often these colonies can get even bigger than thousand burrows!
Bontbekplevier / Ringed plover
Doordat Shetland zo noordelijk (60°NB) gelegen is werd het s'nachts nooit echt donker. De schemering bracht een prachtige sfeer met zich mee. Onvergetelijk om alleen tussen de talloze vogels te lopen. Een foto van deze prachtige steltlopers mocht dan ook niet ontbreken.
Because Shetland is situated fairly north (60°), it didn’t get really dark at night. As the light is wonderfully soft, photographing in these conditions is a real pleasure. It was unforgettable to be surrounded by all these birds. A photograph of this fantastic wader couldn’t be missing.
Kleine jager / Artic skua
Vanuit mijn trekkerstentje kon ik deze vogels observeren. Deze vogels zijn extreem territroiaal. Om naar het toilet te gaan in een gebouwtje wat verder moest ik ter beschreming met een stok boven mijn hoofd zwaaien zodat ze mij niet te grazen gingen nemen.
From my little tent I could observe these wonderful birds. Skuas in general are extremely territorial. If I wanted to go to the toilet in a small building a little further, I had to wave with a plastic stick above my head to protect myself from attacks.
Grote jager / Great skua
Foula wordt ook wel de hoofdstad van de Grote jagers genoemd aangezien je hier een van de grootste kolonies ter wereld terugvindt. Net zoals zoals de Kleine jager is deze vogel ook territoriaal. Kleinere zeevogels zoals papegaaiduikers vormen geliefd voedsel van deze vogels.
Another name for the little, remote island Foula is Skua’s capital as you can find here some of the biggest colonies in the world. Just like its little brother, the Artic Skua, this bird is very aggressive towards intruders. Smaller seabirds such as puffins are a beloved snack of the Great Skua.
Zwarte zeekoet / Black Guillemot
Een van mijn favoriete vogels die ik zag was de zwarte zeekoet. De felrode pootjes fascineren me mateloos. Deze vogels hadden talrijke nestplaatsen in de verweerde muurtjes op het eiland.
One of my favorite birds I encountered was the Black guillemot. The bright red feet are really fascinating. These birds had numerous nesting sites in the little, weathered walls across the islands.
